Topic: Toys
Term 2's topic was something all the children could enjoy.... TOYS! We began by looking at the history of some well known toys and looking at their countries of origin. We then compared old and new toys and sorted them. We noticed that a lot of new toys are electronic and made of plastic, whereas many old toys would be made of wood. We went on to look at one of the oldest toys in the world: puppets. We worked towards designing and sewing our own glove puppets learning the over-stitch technique. Take a look at our results!
As part of our topic we were lucky enough to have a puppet workshop. We started off by watching a shadow puppet show on a story from 1001 Arabian Nights which included a fisherman and a terrifying genie!
The children then got to make their own shadow puppets based on the theme of 'under the sea'. We had an array of octopuses, mermaids, sharks and jellyfish using beautiful colours and shapes to help create a magical shadow. They got to then put on their own puppet shows for each other to enjoy!
Football!
We loved having the sport's coaches this term to teach us some football skills. The children can now pass the ball, control and dribble the ball and shoot it at a target.
The agility, coordination and balance of each child was tested this term as well. It was lovely having the Year 6 Sports Leaders come and help us with each activity!
Welly Walk in Wapley Woods!
We took a chilly walk into Wapley Woods to observe the changes in season over the Autumn. We noticed the changes in trees as we saw orange, yellow, brown and red leaves falling to the ground alongside evergreen trees with their red berries. We made leaf kebabs with the different types of leaves that we encountered on our walk. We also saw some mushrooms growing on trees and insects amongst the plants.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
