Welcome to Year 2

Year 2 is an exciting and important year in your child’s learning journey. As the final year in Key Stage 1, we focus on building independence, confidence, and a love of learning. Children consolidate the skills they have developed in Year 1 while also being challenged with new concepts across the curriculum.

In English and maths, we work on deepening understanding and applying knowledge in different contexts, ensuring children can use their skills with increasing fluency and accuracy. Reading for pleasure is a big part of our daily routine, and we encourage children to explore a wide range of books.

Across the wider curriculum, Year 2 children enjoy hands-on, creative learning throughout our enquiry curriculum, computing, and PE. We also place a strong emphasis on oracy, teamwork, and problem-solving, so children can develop the skills they need both inside and outside the classroom.

This year also includes opportunities for trips, workshops, and special projects that bring learning to life and broaden children’s experiences.

Homework is an important part of learning in Year 2 and helps children to practise and strengthen the skills they are developing in school. It also builds good learning habits, independence and responsibility. We expect all children to complete their homework every week – reading regularly, practising their common exception words, and using NumBots. These activities are designed to be short but meaningful, and they make a real difference to your child’s progress. By working together, we can ensure that every child achieves their very best.
