The school is dedicated to providing an environment that promotes healthy eating and enables children to make informed choices about the food they eat and where it comes from. This is achieved by a whole school approach to food as outlined in our food policy.
We are part of the Food for Life programme which is about making good food the easy choice for everyone – making healthy, tasty and sustainable meals the norm for all to enjoy, reconnecting people with where their food comes from, teaching them how it’s grown and cooked, and championing the importance of well-sourced ingredients. The programme is a flagship programme, widely commissioned by public health teams and taken up by many schools across the country.
The Bronze Food for Life Schools Award was a great way to demonstrate that our school is doing fantastic work to provide healthy school meals, great lunchtimes and food education that has a positive impact on both pupils and the wider community.
Children are welcome to bring a snack for break time but we ask that it is only fruit or vegetable. This can be a single piece, such as an apple or banana, or chopped/ small fruit in a REUSEABLE container. As well as being better for concentration levels after break, we are also very keen to have no wrappers filling the bins and being dropped both in and out of the school building.
KS1 children are already provided with free fruit/veg each day from the Government (they can still bring their own fruit or veg in reusable containers if you wish).
We also offer children the opportunity to have toast each break time. It costs 15 pence per day, which you will need to pay in advance each term via the ‘Shop’ option on School Money. The toast will be delivered to each classroom just before break. The school will notify you each term when it is time to order and pay for the following term.
Packed lunches should be wholesome and healthy.
You should try to include the following:
Starchy Foods - These include bread, rice, potatoes, pastas and others.
Protein Food - These include meat, eggs, beans, fish and others.
Vegetables or salad, and a portion of fruit.
A Dairy Item - This could be yoghurt or cheese.
