Being an Athlete
Intent
At Abbotswood, our vision is to provide engaging opportunities for children to experience high quality Physical Education and school sport through personal challenge and competition that will lead to life-long participation.
PE plays a vital role in promoting physical activities and a healthy lifestyle in a positive and enjoyable way for all pupils. Our curriculum aims to develop and challenge pupils’ abilities in a range of physical activities and sports – helping them to develop their personal fitness, understand the importance of a healthy lifestyle and learn important life skills such as teamwork, honesty and perseverance.
Implementation
Abbotswood, we achieve the target of two hours of taught PE a week.
We currently use PE Planning as our stimuli for PE lessons. The scheme covers all areas of the National Curriculum and ensures that there is progression of skills throughout each sport/unit which are developed as the children progress through the school. Pupils at Abbotswood are therefore given the chance to develop their fundamental skills across a whole range of sports, including: Dance, Gymnastics, Athletics and Tag Rugby to name a few.
At Abbotswood, we also work in partnership with Bristol Forever Sports, whose specialist sports coaches teach PE sessions for three afternoons a week. This allows the children the opportunity to be exposed to new sports, taught by specialised teachers, as well as providing continued professional development for teachers. The after school sessions organised by the coaches are also extremely popular, meaning our children get the chance to experience new sports outside of the classroom too. They are also given lots of opportunities to take part in various competitions against other schools, led by Bristol Sport, during their time at Abbotswood - we've even been lucky enough to host a few on our school grounds too!
We are also a member of the CSET partnership, whereby qualified coaches offer CPD for staff, carry out fundamental skills tests across the year groups and provide lots of opportunities for us to take part in local competitions.
As of July 2023, we have consistently been awarded Gold as part of the School Games Mark, something that we have worked really hard to achieve through giving our children as many opportunities as possible to develop an interest in, and improve, their love of sports and PE. We're really proud to have achieved this recognition for the last two years!
Impact
At the end of each unit, we assess the children against the taught, fundamental skills for the sport they have been learning that term. Using our PE Planning scheme allows us to easily identify those children who have achieved the key learning for each unit.
Alongside our CSET coaches, we assess each child against fundamental agility skills. Using the results, we have then targeted invention for those who require it.

PE Experiences at Abbotswood
Netball
On Wednesday 12th February, the Abbotswood netball team had their very first match of the season! It was a fast-paced game against Wick Primary, full of many incredible goals! The lead was back and forth all the way which made for a tense final few minutes. The eventual score was 8-7 to Wick, just before the final whistle. The team showed brilliant resilience and fantastic teamwork and communication throughout the whole game. We're really proud of how hard they fought, right up until the end.
This is the first of a handful of games coming up over the next couple of months.
Thank you to the parents who braved the bitterly cold conditions and showed their support.
Sportshall Athletics
Well done to the Year 6 Sportshall Athletics team who competed against a group of local schools at Yate Academy! This was their second Sportshall event of the year! They took part in a whole range of relays and field events, showcasing their teamwork, determination and enthusiasm. As you can see from the blurred pictures, they were incredibly speedy!
Thank you, as always, to the parents/carers for offering lifts and support from the side lines!
Sportshall Athletics
On Wednesday, a group Year 6s represented the school at an indoor athletics event at Mangotsfield Secondary School. They took part in a variety of track and field events against six other local schools. They all performed brilliantly in their chosen events, some of them even took on extra races on the night due to a shortage of team members!
They were all so supportive of one another and were highlighted by the coaches as showing great sportsmanship by shaking the hands of their competitors after every relay. After competing against some very experienced teams, Abbotswood finished in 4th place out of the seven schools overall!
Thank you so much to the parents who drove some of the team to and from the event and stayed to watch, it was very much appreciated.
Go Team Abbotswood!
Tag-rugby
Our Abbotswood rugby team competed amazingly in their first ever tag-rugby tournament. The team showed plenty of attacking threat and scored some brilliant tries. We are very blessed to have a great crop of Year 5 players who will learn a lot from these games and their Year 6 team mates. They showed great sportsmanship and patience in what turned out to be a hotly contested competition!
Bristol City Women Visit
Yesterday afternoon, Key Stage Two had a special visit from Ella Powell and Tianna Teisar from Bristol City Women! They spoke to us about the dedication and perseverance it takes to become a professional footballer, as well as what they enjoy most about their job. Thank you for spending your afternoon with us, we loved it! See you at Ashton Gate!
Abbotswood Football!
Yesterday, the girls team took part in the annual Gloucestershire Football Association schools tournament. We were placed in a tough group, but the girls battled to 1-1 draws against St Helen’s and Bromley Heath and lost 1-0 to both St Barnabus and the eventual group winners Raysfield.
Well done in particular to our goal scorers and the girls who volunteered to go in goal. Every girl played their part in what was a brilliant morning full of effort and perseverance.
